Keep it simple

The key to a Montessori Playroom is simplicity. Having a playroom that’s too full can be overwhelming for your little ones. The ideal number of toys that most Montessori gurus will recommend is 8-10, but obviously it’s completely up to you! If you have lots of toys you can do a toy rotation, every month or so swap out some toys your little ones aren’t paying much attention to or even just store ones they aren’t using in some boxes out of view.

Colours

When looking at pictures of Montessori Playrooms you’ll notice most of them are very neutral colours. This is for a few reasons; simplicity and making those beautiful coloured toys and art really POP! Although having white or neutral coloured walls and furniture is stylish and elegant they are sometimes hard to keep clean (especially with young kids). Choose a colour that suits you and your family while making sure it doesn’t draw too much attention away from the important stuff.

Our Montessori Shelves are super stylish and will easily blend into any playroom decor, they’re available in Timber and White finishes in THREE different sizes so make sure to check those out when creating your playroom.

Child-Height

Most if not all of the things in your playroom should be at a height that can be easily reached and seen by your little ones. This will allow them to pick and choose which toys they would like to play with and then be able to pack them away when they’re finished. You want your child to get the most out of their playroom and toys so having things easily accessible will teach them independence and responsibility.

Variety

Having lots of variety in your playroom allows your child to learn lots of useful skills. Rather than just having cars or dolls, include things like blocks, drawing or painting activities, books and a bookshelf, table and chairs, a pikler, any toys that you think will encourage development and most importantly FUN!

Space & Movement

Having a nice open space in your playroom is great for promoting gross motor skills, allowing your little one to have a space in which they can move around, climb and explore is extremely important especially in their early years.

Try using cushions or soft play mats to create various setups for climbing and exploring. Or if you have a little one whose a little more adventurous a pikler triangle and slide might be just what they need!
